History and Culture

The island of Samos has a great history and archeological value that goes back many centuries.
Hera, goddess mother and the wife of Zeus was one of the most important figures of Greek mythology. The Heraion temple and the holy road from Ireon to Pythagorion are a testimony of that great history.

The Efpalinos Tunnel in the hills of Pythagorion is a technical masterpiece of antiquity. This ancient water tunnel is about 1000 m long and crosses in a direct line with the mountain of Pythagorion to the village Ajiades.

Visit the Kastro of Lykourgos Logothetis, which was built on the ruins of the castle of Polykrates, the basilica of Pythagorion, the wonderful excavations in the area of Doryssa, the city walls of Pundes, and the Roman aqueduct near the village Chora.

Pythagoras, the philosopher and the world-famous mathematician, is an unforgettable enrichment to our culture. His birthplace was Pythagorion.

Monuments, castles, and ancient city walls from the dynasty of Polykrates remind us of the wealth spanning these epochs.

Monasteries

Famous monasteries like Spilliani in Pythagorion, Ag. Triadas near Mitilini, Megali Panagia between Mili and Koumaradei, and the monastery Stavros in Mavratzei invite you to reflect and enjoy a wonderful atmosphere.

The countless romantic small chapels on the peaks, the mountainsides, and the hills around Pythagorion show you impressions of a quiet and religious side of the island.

Museums

The archaeological museum of Pythagorion, the paleontological museum in Mitilini, and the folklore museum in Hotel Doryssa are all culturally interesting places to visit.
